Seldom has any group of artists enjoyed the monetary success of these landscapists. Americans showed their inherent love for a literary art by the demand they made for these canvases. Family and Groups painting Durand, when age had weakened his hand, was able to enjoy old age in peaceful, unworried retirement; Kensett became wealthy, and after his death in 1873 the paintings remaining in his studio sold at auction for $150,000; Bierstadt and Church brought prices that are the envy of contemporary landscape painters%u2014$9,000 for a Church waterfall. The low prices they now bring at auction argue not against their literary content, but against their large size, monotonous detail and dry, thin color. The high prices in those days, however, went to artists who followed Europe most closely. Portraits painting Inness had little patronage until he absorbed the French Barbizons. Women in Art Durand during his long life of ninety years saw the landscape school bom, flourish, fall from fashion; saw a new taste for foreign work (Hunt, La Farge, Whistler) arise, saw the young men desert Italy and Diisseldorf for the new gods of Paris and Munich. Church won the unique distinction of praise from the English critic, Ruskin, who was then widely read but little understood by Americans. Oil Painting Reproductions Though in his second period an ardent admirer of Corot, Inness, like Stuart, approached close to the American spirit. His skill in rendering light with brilliancy and his mastery of atmospheric tonality were bound up strongly with his love of the American Scene, the abundance and fertile beauty of his native land. Global Painting As in Peace and Plenty, Inness was most attracted by expansive, idyllic scenes and the calmer moments of nature which he delighted in idealizing with luminous light. Inness, whose career covers the transitional period between the precise German painting of Durand and the romantic conceptions of the French landscapists, believed that the landscape belonged in the realm of emotion, not fact, and succeeded in penetrating beneath a photographic fideUty. "The purpose of the painter," said Inness, "is simply to reproduce in other minds the impression which a scene has made upon him. A work of art does not appeal to the intellect. It does not appeal to the moral sense. Its aim is not to instruct, not to edify, but to awaken an emotion." Cottage Scenes painting Therein Inness was akin to some of the modems. The theory of transcribing intimate emotions drew to a doubtful conclusion in the French-inspired landscapes of J. Francis Murphy, who achieved wide success with his sentimentalized views. The greatest follower of Inness was Ralph Blakelock (1847-1919), whose peculiarly lighted moonlit canvases seem shadowed with the tragic melancholy that was to end in his insanity. Floral Art These genre works meet on a common ground of style and purpose, and the challenge is there to the modern eye to select those which speak in terms of great art from those which lack genius.
